Reflective

You Call This Justice – Explainer Video

I’ve put this video together as an explainer video to go into the themes, concepts and scriptures that are behind this piece of music.

“You Call This Justice” was originally recorded back in 2007, but the lyrics were not written until 2026. This is actually my first vocal Drum and Bass track. I’m bringing my understanding of scripture to face the current reality of the world we live in. We face injustice from those who are supposed to guide our lives, self interest and greed are endemic (maybe a “pandemic”). I don’t think we can expect such people to wake up and learn, so we are going to have to build the way to righteousness ourselves, if that is what we truly desire.

Wormwood Curse – Official Video

This video is about corrupt authority and bitterness of speech, termed the “Wormwood Curse”.

Biblically, lets look at the following scripture (Isaiah 55:1-2):

1)“Come, all you who are thirsty,
come to the waters;
and you who have no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without cost.
2) Why spend money on what is not bread,
and your labor on what does not satisfy?
Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,
and you will delight in the richest of fare.

Water in this case is “teaching”, it is used as a metaphor. Consider what happens to a society if your source of teaching is poisoned, and still yet you have to pay lots of money for it!

A remastered version of Future By Design’s “Third High” initially available on a promo only basis back in 1998. This is actually my first Drum and Bass track. I lacked some of the sophisticated mixing equipment I have now back then, but this is a simple idea that is effectively captured. After a tranquil opening with the sound of sea waves crashing against the shore, the track switches mood switching to a crashing “Amen-break” + sub-bass fuelled epic, typical of the tracks being released at that time. Perhaps the change in musical tone is a contrast reflecting idealism vs reality.

“Third High” from Third High by Future By Design. Released: 2026. Track 1. Genre: Drum and Bass.

I wrote this track when I was searching for worldly ways of dealing with stress and looking for escapism. Let’s just say, all earthly pleasures have their limit, but Yah’s way of dealing with this, is totally different:

You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

Psalm 16:11 NIV

Why are black men so angry – “real-talk” – part 1

It’s true. The environment we live in, particularly for those of the African Diaspora, socially, politically, economically, educationally, in terms of justice, health, religion and I could go on; is in varying degrees against people of colour. In the UK we talk about “institutional racism”, “implicit bias”, “microaggressions”, these are like a slow steady force, like the calm waves against rock, gradually over time wearing us down. Of course you also have outright aggressive racism, which we hear is on the rise in the USA, but still we deal with everywhere in the form of verbal and physical violence, police brutality, even killings.

Are we maladjusted? No. They system we are a part of is not “normal”. To frame such an environment as normal, one has to betray a part of their humanity and thus lose it. This world is anything but normal, things are not as they should be. As a black man, my mind is adjusted for on-going trauma, something verging on “hyper-awareness”, not only because of the closet and even open hostility of people I may meet, and also for situations I may encounter, sporadically or even as part of my routine, such as work. This pressure on the mind is a force that produces some negative reactions. To abstract this, there is noting surprising about that statement for many living organisms, people, animals, plants, all struggle in environments where the conditions are not optimal for their growth.

I found Professor Odi’s comments on black women very interesting, indeed for some not all, “they rather watch me die on the horse than get off it”. Are men to be somewhat like expendable pawns for the women in their lives? Yes men have to be strong, but there needs to be true union of purpose and will between partners for that self-sacrificial love for “providership” to be legitimate. In large part because of the system we are in, many black men will fail to be that “provider” in a reliable way. I’ve seen relationships strained and break down over money. It’s not uncommon for women to leave a relationship if their needs aren’t being met.

My question is, how do we, as black people in the Diaspora evolve in terms of our relationships given the environment we face? Are we headed in a way that promotes relationships with longevity, that build trust, that find a way through the “cold whiteness”; or will we remain locked into whatever favours us at the time, short-termism, perhaps whatever is expedient? I believe we have to think as a community, about building a future, not primarily based on wealth and financial security, but on bonds that hold a more stable currency that keeps us together and slowly improves us from within, even through the various challenges and trials we face.

That all said, this is a must watch video that gets to some topics we don’t often talk about in relation to black men and relationships. I really was refreshing to see and hear these men, part of a growing number of black men talking with eloquence, intelligence and common sense about real issues, and not the foolishness some people are all about nowadays. This video is about biblical time and it will challenge your perspective about calendars, years, holy festivals, how a day is formed, and perhaps even the origin of the creation universe.

I started working on this video because I became concerned that we may not be following the right calendar in terms of observing the feasts of Yah. For example Pesach (Passover) 2020 was on 8th Apr and in 2021 was on 27th Mar. Therefore, we have effectively observed a year with just had a year with 353 days! Consider the scriptures about “times” like our year, and they seem to revolve around a period of 360 days. If Pesach is on the 14th day of the first month of the year (Leviticus 23:5/6) then we should not be able to have two Pesach celebrations within 360 days. I’m learning too, please share your thoughts with me.

The Sun and The Moon were not created until day four of creation (Genesis 1:14-19). Therefore, biblically speaking, times (similar to our concept of a year), begin on weekday four, our “Wednesday”. Here begins the cycle of counting holy days.

Q: Which Wednesday is the first biblical day of the year?

A: The Wednesday closest to Spring Equinox day will be Aviv 1 signalling the beginning of counting for the New Biblical year, providing at least 364 days have been counted since the last Aviv 1 (note Jubilees 6:30).

And all of the days which will be commanded will be fifty-two weeks of days, and all of them are a complete year. (Jubilees 6:30).

Unlike secular days which start at midnight…

The Bible establishes that days start at sundown and continue until the following sundown, evening first, then morning. Genesis 1:3 states, “So there was evening, and there was morning, one day”. This phrase repeats in Genesis 1:8; 1:13; 1:19; 1:23 & 1:31.

Christianities “syncretism” (merging of belief systems), the Holy scriptures, with pagan traditions, has created a currupted faith, which changes generation after generation. Yes many Christians blindly say, “God is the same, yesteday, today and forever!”
