A remastered version of Future By Design’s “Elevation” initially released back in 1998. This is a meditative, minimal and experimental House track. When I wrote this track it was purely about escapism. What was I trying to escape? I don’t think I knew it back then, but I was trying to escape the clutches of a life lived without realising a vibrant purpose. And Abram goeth up from Egypt (he and his wife,
Genesis 13:1 – Young’s Literal Translation
and all that he hath, and Lot with him) towards the south;
The Young’s Literal Translation isn’t perfect, but when I am looking at what the bible is saying on a fundamental level, I use it for analysis. Notice this translation doesn’t mention the Negev dessert like most modern translation do, it talks about going “UP”, and as many other translations up until the King James Version, it renders “into the south”. We must understand two-dimensional maps that make us subliminally think that “up” means north and “down” means south, when the earth isn’t two-dimensional and perfectly flat like a two-dimensional surface did not exist until around 600BC. However, Abraham lived before maps of this kind existed, and this scripture was written way before that (~ 2000BC).
Notice the map puts Lower Egypt in the north, and Upper Egypt in the south. This is because Africa as a continent generally rises in elevation (height) from north to south. The Nile that flows into The Mediterranean Sea, has it source in further south in places like Zimbabwe/Uganda (Lake Victoria), and some argue Rwanda and Burundi.
Abraham didn’t go north into the what is known as The Negev on the Sinai Peninsula, but rather south, further into Africa. If you know, you know…

Burnished Bronze’s “Masquerade” – A warning to all seeking Yah (“God”), that we must be aware of the false teachings so accepted by the world, that have caused confusion, suffering and hypocrisy to thrive in this world.
When Yah gives His Word,
what man can dispute it?
Can you make religion out of lies –
and believe that God won’t refute it?
There is a way that seems right to a man,
but in the end it leads to death.
I hope and pray that you will understand,
they tell their lies to feed their greed…

You are worthy,
Our Messiah,
You are worthy,
To receive,
Honour and glory,
Praise and power,
You created all things good,
By your will they came to be,
You are worthy,
I believe.
I’ll follow you,
No matter what the rebels say,
Trust in you my God.
Whether you’re black, white or brown,
And whether you’re rich, poor, or broke,
Now everyone come praise Yah’s name,
Ever worthy let’s lift Him up.

This was my first album, and was a couple of years in the making. I bought some music production equipment myself after leaving university and worked on an album over the course of 2 years. It was an interesting project which saw me trying to cover all the bases, recording, artwork direction, mastering direction, pressing CD’s, promotion, distribution, accounts. It took a lot of work. The manufacture of first Future By Design album was funded by The Prices Youth Business Trust, as it was called at that time.
At this time I was just into music, and had no direction about life, too at ease to realise the important things going on around me.
Music can’t break down barriers except all but superficially. Music draws on catharsis, empathy, experience, it paints wonderful and sometimes not so wonderful pictures. It can inspire change, but without action, it means nothing.
The original track listing is shown above on a blurred out image of, myself, not an alien, in the background! Perhaps I too wasn’t seeing things to clearly back then.
Mark Marcus deserves a special credit for adding the missing touch to “Mr Pleasure” a couple of octave notes at the ending was the icing on the cake. Incidentally, Springvale studios post production never made it onto the final release as their master CD they gave me had an error on it. Thanks to Key Production for getting the release out on time after DAT tapes were supplied.
Only 1,000 copies of this album were produced, the majority sold from The Virgin Megastore on Oxford Street in London, where I managed to get placed on a listening post. There was some airplay on John Peel (Radio 1), SGR FM (Ipswich) and some other local pirate radio stations played it quite a bit.
